Daily Driver (lack of) progress report

Daily Driver will eventually come out. It’s just a matter of timing, really. The stars need to be aligned for a game of that scope.

There were a couple of events during the development so far that caused me to kind of get burned out on it. Stuff that was outside of my control. But I always come back to it.

It had the chance to be in the list of forthcoming games next to Under The Castle, Mars After Midnight, Pullfrog, Sound Mind, Faraway Fairway, Oom. But obviously it’s not. And I can’t give you a good reason why it’s not! “Life” I guess, but on my side it’s more complicated than that as I was involved in a number of accidents and unfortunate events that have left me with “PTSD” (I put that in quotes as what this is exactly is something I am still trying to comprehend with the help of several professionals) which I am slowly coming to terms with. I took some time off Sept 2022 to April 2023.

I also had my heart set on music by a particular musician, but that’s also becoming less likely to happen as it would cost too much money. So I have begun selecting music by somebody else. It’ll take time for me to be OK with that decision.

Given that making games for Playdate is my one and only job, I need to do things in an order that makes sense. My current focus is a half dozen small games to make sure enough money is coming in to allow me some more time to complete something a little bigger like Daily Driver.

So far I’ve released YOYOZO (Nov) and Fore! Track (Dec), and in February there will be an expanded version of ICARUS. Then there are more games in early stages of development: Curling (sports), Cosmic Trash (sort of like Tempest meets Magical Drop) and some sort of billiards-style action puzzle hiscore game. But rest assured Daily Driver is a goal of mine when I’m a bit more comfortable in picking up a larger project.

To give some sort of idea of timelines, YOYOZO and Fore! Track both took a few weeks, which is something I’m comfortable doing on a game at the moment just to manage risk and my own situation. Daily Driver I would estimate still has about a 2-3 months work to wrap it up neatly.

YOYOZO getting a GOTY (Game of the Year) accolade can only help my situation!
